"Simbang Gabi" and My Father's "Parol"

By Paul N. Najera

Simbang Gabi has become so much a part of the lives of Filipinos. It has been part of our Christian Family tradition during the Christmas season. It was adopted from the Catholic “Misa de Gallo” which in Spanish literally means mass of the rooster because it is held at dawn when the rooster crows.

The masses lasts for nine consecutive days beginning December 16 and were held early at dawn to give the Filipino farmers in the beginning the chance to attend mass because they work in the fields the whole day from morning until dusk. This religious event dates back to the time when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi celebrated the first feast of the Nativity in 1565 in the Philippines and perhaps traces its roots from Mexico where it is called “Misa de Aguinaldo.

I always go home when I was young to attend the Misa de Gallos and enjoy with family and friends the abundant joy, warm smiles and joyful get-togethers after the masses before Christmas.

I will never forget one early morning, just at the crack of dawn, a horrifying experience after returning home with members of my family after attending a Misa de Gallo at the Agno Catholic Church.

My late father never failed to assemble a “parol” in the form of a huge star which he always suspended with a cord in front of one of the windows of our house. He always made it a point to light up a candle inside the lantern before we go to church to attend mass.

One early morning when all of us were returning home from church, my father, who loved to look at his prized “shining star” from beneath our window suddenly stopped walking and looked stunned by what he saw. The star with its multicolored paper wrappings is now just a frame of bamboo! All of us thought that a jealous sucker fooled around with father’s beautiful “parol” and destroyed it while we were all attending mass. Upon further examination, we realized that the the light of the candle inside the parol must have burned out all the coverings thus showing only the bamboo framework of father's beautiful handiwork.

Had the parol been put nearer the roof, it was probable the fire might have completely razed our house! What a miserable Christmas we might have gone through! My parents crossed themselves and we gave thanks to the “Santo Bangkay” we always keep in our house for saving our home again. The first time, according to my older folks, was when all the other houses around us got burned down except our house during the fight of Agno and other guerillas with the Japanese during the Japanese occupation.]]>
