Second, I believe that the signature on the back of a credit card is necessary to indicate that the contract has been accepted between the individual and the credit card company. So an unsigned credit card would be considered an invalid credit card.
For what it's worth, a few years ago, I signed my credit card but also put a small sticker that said "ask for ID". But that made no difference the two times that my credit card number was stolen via the Internet. There's no way to ask for photo ID on the internet!
