No Equity? No Problem! How To Pay For Big Home Improvements

20

With the home market still sinking across the country, a lot of people are deciding to upgrade their homes instead of moving out. Upgrading the house you live in is often much less expensive than trying to find a new one, but there are still some significant costs involved with many different larger home upgrade projects.

Many large home improvement projects are costly enough that it is challenging to save up all the cash you need all at once. By the same token, home improvements have become much more involved and often included completely changing a room rather than just putting up a little paint and moving around some furniture. Here are 3 things you can do to you can make a home improvement more affordable:

Do A Little Bit At A Time: When you upgrade a bathroom you're really refinishing, replacing cabinets, putting in new fixtures and doing many little additional things. Instead of spending the total amount of money all at one time, why not remodel one part of your room each year so that the cost is spread out over multiple years. A lot of home improvement projects are really a bunch of smaller projects all strung together.

Hardware Store Credit Cards: A lot of home improvement stores such as Ace Hardware and Menard's offer low fee credit cards with zero interest or zero payments for a limited period of time. If you're able to purchase all your building supplies from one of these stores with a credit card you may be able to spread the expenses of the home improvement out over many months, making it appear much less costly. The best hardware store credit cards can usually be used to pay for supplies as well as contractor services.

Do The Project Yourself: If you're really handy then you might be able to finish your entire home improvement project on your own and you could save hundreds of dollars in labor expenses. Not everyone is a handyman, but most homeowners can learn some basic home repair and upgrading skills. Finishing a home repair project by yourself is a great way to increase your confidence and save yourself a bunch of money! Even demolition work can be done on your own if you're careful.

Most homeowners end up spending a lot of years in the same home, so taking your time with home improvements can actually save you cash and give you the chance to enjoy watching your house become your castle! When it comes to improving your home, remember that you only have to please yourself. Don't be talked into paying more for a home improvement than you feel comfortable.

Money is tight for a lot of people right now, but you can learn how to modify your home loan with your bank so that you have extra money available for those home improvements.

Yeah, I've known some non-cooks, but it's always a bit mysterious to me: what's the big deal with cooking? Of course, my mother's family were all professional cooks, and my mother started me cooking at an early age. (I recall burning my finger—not very badly—at age 4 when I was cooking a steak.)

One of the things in the ideal jr. high and high school curriculum would be a "life survival skills" series that teaches all the daily skills (and would be a required set of courses): making minor plumbing repairs, cooking, simple sewing, basic home repair and carpentry, and so on. The things one must know to feel competent and live comfortably without requiring constant help and direction.

I also don't buy into "a lot of people" are close to retirement and have no retirement wealth because there home is underwater.

Many, many, many people bought homes in the 70's, 80's and 90's who are approaching retirement age who probably have ample home equity. However, if they lose their job, they will not be allowed to access any of the home equity, even if the bank is in no danger of losing out if the home equity is not paid back because the home is still worth 30-40% more than what was taken out.
