Dear Mr Khosla, I read with interest the recent NY Times article about how you have made microfinance and credit to poor people in India a successful commercial venture. I don't know if anyone has done this except you. Congratulations.
My question is : Have you thought about health insurance for the individuals who are the reciepients of the loans?
It may be possible to get excellent insurance coverage for reasonable rates in India. For instance, in the 1990s the Manipal group of educational institutions were getting all their enrolled students insured for a annual price of Rs 200. Not only did this protect their "investment" in the individual they were enrolling, but it provided their hospital with a guaranteed payment in case a student went in sick or injured for treatment.
As one of the enduring causes of poverty is illness and the expenses that accompany it, health insurance would not only protect the micro-credit lender agaisnt a loan recipient defaulting on the loan because of illness or injury, it would protect the recipient of the loan from a family medical emergency that would wipe out all profits and the ability to repay the loan.

The is little doubt that we are in violent disagreement about this bullsh*t known as the JSF Program.
Sadly, JSF stands for just-so-flawed.
This could have been a great, little Tier 2 battle field interdictor/close air support aircraft with a reasonable level of self protection capability. Could also have been a good C4ISR asset.
Then the rent-seekers and low lifes got their hands on it and, well, the rest is history.
Just a couple of things for you to consider, though.
1. This program started out at less than 200 Billion Dollars (194.14 Billion in TY$s with an SDD Budget of 19 Billion Dollars) when you consider the 409 aircraft units removed from the APB circa 2002/03. But there again, what's 50 Billion Dollars between friend?

2. The JSF is not a failed Ponzi Scheme. It is still alive and kicking, enabling those who are riding on its back to rip off anyone and everyone silly enough to try to get on for the ride.

I have found that besides scissors, the greatest tool in eliminating credit card debt is a simple spreadsheet program! You can chart out months or even years of payments and it's simple to see how even a few dollars – burrito money, as it were, added to every month can substantially help us free ourselves.
