Kim,
This is not new! As I am a retailer (began in the biz in late 70's) I can tell you that many consumers might (?) be able to calculate a 50% discount but it is not uncommon for 25% off to require translation by the sales associate. Age is not a factor here. Nor is the use of computers or calculators, although they may add to the lack of basic math skills. And if the consumer can't do the simple math the sales associate probably can't either. Store Managers need to teach cashiers how to count back change, as well as how to smile at the customer.
Is it any wonder that so many consumers can't understand their own finances/mortgages/credit card interest?

Certainly by now Tivo must understand the resistance so many consumers have toward monthly fees. Many consumers will not buy a product with monthly fees on principle, regardless of whether the fees are $1/mo or $15/mo.
As you note, Tivo has said in the past that lifetime was unprofitable over the long term at $300. But why not bring it back at a higher price? Surely there must be a point at which the extra fee is profitable over the long-term.
I would like to see the Series3 "Lite" offered at 1) $299 with monthly fees or 2) $699-$799 with no monthly fees (i.e. lifetime). The lifetime does not need to be transferable. They could even call the lifetime unit a "Special Edition" and sell it with a larger hard drive for $999. Wouldn't that be a great for customers and investors alike?
Tivo Series3 (160Gb)
$299 + monthly fee
Tivo Series3 Special Edition (160Gb)
$699 + no monthly fee
Tivo Series3 Pro Special Edition (500Gb)
$999 + no monthly fee

My second comment is on what I think about socialism. Well, I mainly think that people are trying to scare you with that word, and there is no serious danger of the US becoming socialist. As I pointed out above, the top tax rate is among the lowest it's ever been (as are the other rates, I think). In fact, the overall tax rate is so low that many essential public services are being starved. You complained about how the states are borrowing money? They are doing that because they don't have a revenue base. Take Colorado Springs as an example: here.
My feeling, based on having lived in places that have both more and less amounts of "socialism", is that the nicest places to live have a balance: some services that are paid for collectively, by the government, and some that are paid for privately, with prices set by the market. I think collective payment needs to happen for services that the market isn't "free" for. And the market may not be free not because of laws against it, but either because people can't choose things freely (for instance, with health care, if you're run over by a car, you don't have time to leisurely compare emergency rooms) or because for some things there is nothing to buy unless everyone pools resources to make it in the first place.
For example, everyone agrees that the free market can't run the military. That is properly the purview of the government. Same thing with roads: if everyone needs to use something, but only by pooling our money can we pay for it (rather than doing so individually), then that is when collective payment is good. Same thing with schools. There is no way that you or I could hire a private tutor for 12 years for our kids — much less multiple ones who know all about different subjects — but by pooling the costs with everyone, we can get much more bang for the buck than you ever could individually. Health care is the same way.
Part of the reason I think this so strongly comes from comparing all the places I have lived. Australia is really the nicest in terms of services available to everyone. You've heard my health care story, which really made quite an impact on me. It would have cost at least $10-$20K had the same thing happened in the US, if not more. I don't have to worry about it. There are also free festival things in the park all the time. There are many, many parks: half of the city is park. There are free bikes provided by the city that you can just randomly go down and ride around (as long as you return them the next day). All of the museums downtown are free. There's a free tram and a free bus that goes around the entire downtown. There are free services if you need job counselling or mental health treatment. Because people can get their mental problems treated and aren't driven to complete desperation due to poverty, crime is lower so I feel safer. Because the school system is well-funded, I know that people are going to be able to do the jobs that are available. And I pay less in taxes than I did for taxes + health insurance in America.
By contrast, Mozambique (where, you may remember, I spent a year) has way less taxes and way more free market even than America does. And it sucks. I mean, it is okay for the very very richest, but even then, I'd rather be middle-class in America or Australia than the wealthiest 1% in Mozambique. Because there are so many very poor people there, the richest have to hide away in gated communities and go around with armed guards that they hire all the time. There are very few rules limiting any corporations, which means many people are horribly exploited and are forced to do things like live near untreated pollution. There are landmines everywhere that the government can't afford to pick up. It takes 10 hours to go about 150 miles because the roads are so bad. Class sizes are about 50 kids per school room, many times with no desks, because the government can't afford to build them. The average life expectancy is something like 38. Now, I know you don't want America to be like Mozambique, but when I look at what people who advocate no policy proposals besides cutting taxes say — despite the fact that they're the lowest they've been in a while — I see it heading to that. You can't afford things like roads, and schools, and libraries, without some taxes. You just can't. It's not good for the rich or the poor.
So, no, I'm not a fan of socialism either. I think it can go too far. But I don't think America is anywhere near that place, and I think America could become a much better place — for all Americans — if people were a little more willing to pay, via taxes, for the services that everyone benefits from (at least indirectly).
Right now I'd accept any player Wenger signs that isn't a complete disaster. #desperation

Matt,
Yikes. If you're going to be a "bottom line" thinker, you need to have the correct bottom line.
When God's people meet in the presence of Jesus by the power of the HS to worship the triune God, glorify Him and enjoy him forever… there is more going on than simply the way they are perceived by the community.
Perception by the community, and service to the community are important, but they are not the "bottom line."
