Financial Aid Search and Free Money for Students – Get Useful Tips
A financial aid search can take you through several programs, and confuse the best of us. The programs below offer some help to get you through college. Take a minute and read through it. These programs just refer to free money for college, or nearly free.
One term you may want to learn is FAFSA. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is a form you fill out to determine if you qualify for federal grants or loans. Many states also use it for their programs. Let's get into programs so you can find some money.
1. Government grants, the main grant you can get from the federal government being the Pell grant. Others include the Federal Supplemental Equal Opportunity Grant or FSEOG for cases of extreme need. The Academic Competitiveness Grant or ACG, for the first two years of college for students with great academics and little money. The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent or SMART Grant, applies to the last 2 years of a 4-year degree, in a technical field. Math, engineering, chemistry, biology and many other majors would all fit if you apply for this grant program. You must fill out a FAFSA for all federal grant programs.
2. State grant programs: nearly every state has a grant program to offer more aid to their residents. You can find these through the state website, usually the department of higher education. Most of these require a FAFSA to determine need.
3. Scholarships: the subject of scholarships fills pages and pages of books. Why? Because everyone is different, and most only give an award to 1 to 5 people. Essentially, you get a scholarship for demonstrating talent or skill in a certain area, such as music, academic achievement (grades), sports, and so on. Once you have a scholarship, you may be able to renew it. You can find hundreds of scholarships from every organization you can think of, some right in your own neighborhood. Be careful of consultants that offer to find you a scholarship if you'll pay them. Usually a FAFSA isn't part of this, but could be if you are applying for a state or federal scholarship.
In the section below I cover a few programs that you have probably heard of. These programs offer great help, but may require you to plan ahead. Again, just free money for college or nearly free programs here again in this section.
4. HOPE scholarship and Lifetime Learning tax credits actually aren't a scholarship – sorry. These are tax credit programs. You can use tuition and fees from your family members that you support (think dependents) as tax credits when figuring your taxes. HOPE only applies to the first two years. The Lifetime Learning tax credit you can use over and over again. It phases out as your income goes up. Not financial aid like a grant, where someone gives you a check, but may it apply to you. Talk to a tax pro for more in this one. (Also, several states have scholarship programs named HOPE. Those are different programs than this one.)
5. Tuition waiver programs usually come from states, and offer certain groups either free or greatly reduced tuition. Typically applies to state schools, but some programs include private colleges and universities. As financial aid goes, free tuition is good.
6. Loan forgiveness programs offer to pay your loans in exchange for your work in a specific field. For example, work as a school teacher and you can get some of your loans paid or forgiven. This program also goes by the name tuition forgiveness. Note that this doesn't happen until you go to school, graduate, and get a job that offers this type of aid. Still, borrow and someone else pays it back is a nice package.
7. Tuition Assistance programs or Tuition Reimbursement may sound familiar if you have a job. Many companies offer a program like this to employees, and generally few ever apply to use it. I have worked for a company that offered reimbursement, where you pay, take the class, then fill out a form and get some or all of your money back. And I have also worked for a company that paid the tuition up front for me. Both programs can offset much of the tuition for your schooling. No FAFSA involved.
Several options to choose from, and you can do all of them if you want. Searching for financial aid doesn't have to be hard. Keep looking, and you'll find a way.

Julian I do tend to agree with the need for new houses but perhaps not where they are to go. If they are properly planned, notice taken of the required infrastructure and also additional amenities provided then new housing can be of great benefit. However when they appear to be "dumped" in a certain area with no thoughts taken of the above then I do oppose them.
I remember 4 years ago in my Math 101 (no prerequisites required) class on Bradley, we spent the first 2 months of the class learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and percents. I remember one isolated 2 hour class in which we had to cover, for one student who couldn't understand, the reasons that 25% was equal to 0.25 that was equal to 1/4.
Looking back on it now, I am glad that I went to a VERY small rural community high school (95 in my graduating class) and weren't able to really afford calculators beyond your simple basic ones and those were only allowed on tests in Chemistry and Biology. In addition, and I'm not sure if this is still done or not, but we would have to show ALL work on any problems we did in Math, Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy, etc. before we even did the calculations.
Due to this, when I worked at my first job in high school at the Dairy Queen, I rarely used the register to make change. To this day, when I purchase an item and I pay with a bill, I know automatically what the change should be. It took me a while to really appreciate those extra loops I went through as a high schooler, but looking back on it and looking at some of the kids today, I'm more thank thankful for it.

I thought I'd share the Baker College response to the OIG audit. Please let me know if you have any questions. Take care – Julia Teahen, President of Baker College Online————————————
Mr. William J. Taggart
Chief Operating Officer
Federal Student Aid
U.S. Department of Education
Union Center Plaza, Room 112G1
830 First Street, N.E.
Washington, DC 20202
Dear Mr. Taggart:
Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the Final Audit Report, entitled Baker College’s Compliance with Selected Provisions of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and Corresponding Regulations. As a result of reviewing the Final Audit Report and consistent with our response dated November 6, 2009, Baker College still vigorously disputes the findings of the Office of Inspector General. Specifically, there are three areas of significant dispute; official withdrawals, unofficial withdrawals and the interpretation of “academic activity.”
Unofficial Withdrawals
Baker College has thoroughly searched for unofficial withdrawals from both the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 academic years based on procedures from the Department of Education School Participation Team and the audit that was conducted by them during the period from June 2008 through February 2009. The College satisfied any resultant liability with regard to unofficial withdrawals and the matter has been closed by the Department of Education. It should be restated that the College examined 100% of potential unofficial withdrawals based upon F grades for the referenced years as determined in conjunction with the Department.
Official Withdrawals
The College used an observed or recorded last date of attendance, either as reported by an instructor, student, or employee, when calculating refunds to Title IV aid in the case of official withdrawals. Baker College did not save online course documentation from Blackboard as documentation of the last date of attendance because Carina stores our official academic records. The College maintains Carina records, accounts receivable screens, R2T4 worksheets, FA files and academic files on all these students in compliance with published and well established regulations. This is where the College believes the OIG is using double standard as applied to online delivery as compared to traditional classroom delivery. Grades, student files, recorded attendance, and last dates of attendance as reported by students and instructors have long sufficed for validation of eligibility for Title IV funds. The Department of Education has not to date published any further regulations or guidelines to clarify different standards for online classes and it was not addressed in A Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, published June 18, 2010 (75 FR 34806).
What Constitutes Academic Activity
Baker College firmly maintains that it is in compliance with regulation 34CFR668.22(c)(3) and will not restate our objection to the OIG’s interpretation.
Furthermore and in particular, it appears that the majority of online deliverers use only student log-in to either the learning management system or into each enrolled course, as evidence of attendance. Student log-in and entry into the electronic classroom, is comparable to standards used in determining attendance in onground delivery.
Baker College has gone above industry standards in determining online attendance, as outlined in the OIG Final Report (ED-OIG/A05I0012). Examples of acceptable academic activities are noted in a letter from the U.S. Department of Education to WCET: “Examples of acceptable academic activities that the Department has provided include participation in an online discussion and initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a course-related question.” Even though Baker College uses similar criteria in determining student attendance, this is a more rigorous standard than is required in face-to-face classrooms.
Additionally, and from a rhetorical perspective, the College believes that a sworn statement from a student, instructor or employee that a student was enrolled or sufficiently engaged in a course would constitute adequate evidential matter to meet the standard of evidence of academic activity. And while the College does not take sworn statements when calculating withdrawals, it considers the representations of instructors, students and other staff to bear the utmost integrity.
Also of note is the fact that the vast majority of excess Title IV funds that OIG contends the College kept, was in fact not kept by the College. Instead, based on our low tuition cost structure, excess funds were generally dispersed to the students to be used for other education related expenses. Although not required to, the College assumed and paid the full liability that resulted from the F grade audit.
Please be advised that Baker College has taken all recommendations of both the Office of Inspector General and the U.S. Department of Education into account and implemented them within one academic quarter. The only issue that remains undetermined is whether the Carina attendance system meets the, as yet to be published or determined, requirements of the U.S. Department of Education.
The College has appreciated the interaction with the OIG and its valuable input into improving our administrative procedures and information system capabilities. The College’s intentions have always been to steadfastly adhere to all published and established regulations and practices and to perform as close to 100% compliance with those regulations and practices as humanly possible.
Sincerely,
F. James Cummins, President
Baker College
The steps Congress taking will destroy Indian higher education (primary education is non existant in any case).
BJP's Education Minister MM Joshi was taking the opposite step of making 10 more institutes equivalent of IIT which was great.
Also, UPA-I implemented OBC quota in higher education which was another fraud.
Higher education, innovation will be the key to future success of a nation. Look at how China marching ahead in creating finest educational facilities while Congress is surrendering national interests on many aspects to foreign power.
The cum laude system that Boulder is talking about does make a certain amount of sense — you reward legitimate academic achievement that way without placing so much emphasis on who is first, second, etc. This is of course the way colleges have been doing it since forever. And from the college's standpoint we don't really care so much if you were tops in your class, but we care a lot if you have legitimate academic credentials coming in.

4:18pmDid you read the editorial in the WSJ last week that said the US is currently producing less PhDs in Engineering and Chemistry and more PhDs in Education and Liberal Arts. The editorial was in support of immigration laws to let foreign engineers into the country so corporations, such as Microsoft, don't move their business to other immigration friendly countries, like Canada. That's why this is not “bullshit”. It's a nationwide problem, bad math and bad science education, and it's just come to light in Ridgewood.
